Their logo, an acorn, (made out of papier-mache, approx 2 feet x 2.5 feet) was in the center of a contemplative walking path, and featured books including JD Vance's Hillbilly Elegy and Senator Ben Sasse's The Vanishing American Adult. Both authors were scheduled to speak at the event. Excerpts from the books, along with questions, were highlighted and placed on pedestals to generate dialogue among participants. iPads were located at path entrance and exit for people to tweet their responses and continue the dialogue publicly. The original postcard was mailed to my parents in Brooklyn, from my aunt when she visited London in 1974. She signed it “kiss all the girls”. Throughout my life I would have dreams about the ocean and rising tides. After Hurricane Sandy struck and I was left to clean up my parents’ home, I had a personal, firsthand experience of the wreckage caused by natural disasters and the impact of climate change. This 1960’s postcard with its peaceful landscape of rolling rapids made me take pause and reflect on the potential of a body of water to wreak havoc. Perhaps an unfathomable possibility back then. It is founded in the belief that the body holds our emotional memories. Emotional trauma lives in our musculature and creates energetic blocks which keeps us from stepping into our lives fully. These blocks not only inform the ways our bodies look, but also the ways our character defenses develop. We often (but not always) work with props such as a large foam cube which we may hit with a bat or tennis racket, push against with our hands or pelvis, kick with our feet, etc. There are also rollers which we may roll on the front body or back body, in order to open blocks in the solar plexus, heart/will center or thighs. Vocalization/ screaming, and deep breathing are also often part of the work. In general, sessions may be loud and there could be a big movement of energy, or it may be quiet and gentle. It depends on many factors, including the energy the client brings that day, combined with the instincts of the practitioner as to how to guide the client in the intervention they choose. The original postcard was mailed to my parents in Brooklyn, from my aunt when she visited London in 1974. She signed it “kiss all the girls”. Throughout my life I would have dreams about the ocean and rising tides. After Hurricane Sandy struck and I was left to clean up my parents’ home, I had a personal, firsthand experience of the wreckage caused by natural disasters and the impact of climate change. This 1960’s postcard with its peaceful landscape of rolling rapids made me take pause and reflect on the potential of a body of water to wreak havoc. Perhaps an unfathomable possibility back then.
